Why Vegan?

What is Veganism?

Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose. Vegans avoid, as far as is possible and practicable, using anything that comes from an animal.

Why does Veganism matter?

Veganism is, at its heart, an opposition to violence which relates to how humans interact with other animals, one another, and the planet we share. Animal exploitation is directly linked to human exploitation and environmental destruction. We believe that no- one should suffer for our wants, and so consider it necessary to examine and reject the violence that is done when we use animals.

Why not just be vegetarian?

Vegetarianism simply isn’t enough: it still exploits animals. The dairy and egg industries are every bit as violent as, and are directly linked to, the meat industry. Funding one funds the other.

But I only eat free range/organic…

Those terms actually mean very little in terms of oppression and suffering. They exist to make consumers feel less bad about contributing to suffering. We are an abolitionist organisation, which means we want a complete and total end to oppressive behaviours, including animal use. Seeking better welfare is not enough, as it still denies freedom to individuals. We want empty cages, not bigger ones.

Will I be unhealthy?

No. Veganism is a very healthy way to live, provided you take care to balance your diet and eat sensibly. Do consult your doctor if you have a health condition that a change in lifestyle could affect. In general, however, people feel much healthier and happier after going vegan, as a vegan diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, pulses, and grains, with no animal fats to clog up your works.

Is being Vegan difficult?

Being vegan in a non-vegan world can be challenging, but it is not actually that hard. Access to vegan products and information is better than it has ever been, and with the growing number of vegans around, it is easier to nd people who will celebrate and support you in becoming and staying vegan.

While positive change and justice can take time, we believe that veganism is a joy, rather than a sacrifice. After all, you aren’t really giving anything up. You just stop taking what never belonged to you in the first place. 

Aren’t there bigger problems?

We believe that violent and oppressive behaviours are the root of all problems which currently torment existence. Animal exploitation is part of, and not separate from, issues such as war, inequality, prejudice, and corporate greed.

Veganism is about far more than just opposing animal rights violations. It is about justice for all, human and non-human rights, food security, and respect for our planet.

Can one person make a difference?

Yes, absolutely! Every justice movement begins with an individual standing up for what they believe is right. And, as veganism continues to grow, each individual contributes more and more to reduce the suffering in the world.

What else can iI do?

Being vegan is the least we can do to reduce the suffering of animals and harm to the planet. A great next step would be to:

  • Get involved with local vegan groups.
  • Take part in activism to oppose violence or oppression.
  • Volunteer with activist groups or sanctuaries.
  • Learn more about social justice and intersectional feminism.
